Pass the Parrot lets you send short voice messages to friends, carried by a 3D parrot you dress yourself. This page says exactly what we keep, why, and for how long. The short version: we keep only what the app needs to work, we never sell it, and there are no ads. The app also sends anonymous usage statistics, described under "Usage statistics", which never include your messages, names, contacts or phone numbers.
What we collect
- Your parrot's profile: the handle you pick, your parrot's name, its colours, prop and perch. Friends see these.
- Your voice messages: the recordings you send, and when you sent them. Direct messages are for you and the recipient. Messages sent in an invite-only Treehouse are available to its accepted members, including members who join later; leaving revokes access.
- Photo and video postcards: only the files you choose to send, their thumbnails, captions, dimensions and duration. We do not upload your photo library. Reported attachments can be reviewed by our moderation team.
- Messages without sound: a move (like a hug) you send, the mood you picked, and when.
- Your Treehouses: invitations, memberships, messages, notification preferences and recent presence. Other members can see when you are in the Treehouse.
- Your friends: who you are friends with, requests you sent or received, and people you blocked.
- Seeds and items: your Seeds balance, what you earned and spent it on, and the items you own. If you buy a Seed pack, Apple's transaction number, which pack and when, so the Seeds reach your parrot exactly once. Never your card or Apple ID details.
- Reports: if you report someone, what you reported and why.
- A sign-in key: a random key stored in your phone's Keychain (on Android, its secure storage). We keep only a one-way fingerprint of it.
- Apple ID link (optional): if you choose to back up your parrot with Sign in with Apple, Apple's anonymous user id for this app. We never receive your name or email.
- Notification address: if you allow notifications, your phone's push address, so we can tell you when a parrot lands.
We do not collect your name, email, phone number, contacts, location, your photo library, or advertising identifiers. If you choose a contact or enter a number to invite a friend, it stays on your device and is passed only to your phone’s messaging composer. On Android the app asks for permission to read your contacts only so that the contact picker can open; it reads just the contact you pick, and its numbers stay on your phone. They are never sent to us and are never part of the usage statistics. Your text includes your parrot’s name, invite code and conversation link. You choose whether to send it. We do not use advertising SDKs.
Usage statistics
To understand how the app is used and to improve it, the app sends anonymous usage statistics to PostHog, an analytics service in the United States that processes them on our behalf. These are app events such as the app being opened, a conversation being opened, a message being sent, a friend being added, an invite being sent or a visit starting, with simple details such as whether it was a chat or a Treehouse, what kind of message it was (voice, typed, move or postcard) and whether it was with Polly, the practice parrot. They never include what a message says or shows, captions, your parrot’s name or handle, your friends, invite codes, contacts or phone numbers.
Each event is tagged with a random identifier the app makes up the first time it is opened, plus the app version and whether it is an iPhone or an Android phone. It is not your parrot’s handle or name, your account, Apple ID, Google account or advertising identifier, and we never connect it to who you are. Like any internet service, PostHog receives your device’s IP address, which it uses to estimate an approximate location such as country and city. Deleting the app deletes the identifier.
We use these statistics only to understand and improve the app. They are not used for advertising, are not shared with advertisers or data brokers, and are not combined with data from other apps or websites to track you. Our PostHog plan keeps them for one year.
Why
To run the app: to deliver your messages to your friends, show your parrot, keep your Seeds and items, keep people safe (blocking and reports), and send the notifications you asked for. And, through the anonymous usage statistics only, to understand how the app is used so we can improve it.
Who else handles it
- Cloudflare runs our servers and stores the data, voice clips and postcards (in the United States).
- Apple delivers notifications, confirms Sign in with Apple if you use it, and handles any App Store payment. We never see your card.
- Expo relays notifications to Apple's notification service.
- PostHog receives the anonymous usage statistics (in the United States).
We never sell or share your data for advertising. We would only disclose it if the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
- Messages disappear 24 hours after they are seen: voice messages, typed words, moves, photos and videos, in chats and in treehouses (in a treehouse, once everyone has seen it). Anything never opened is deleted after 7 days. A message someone reports is kept until we have reviewed it, for up to 30 days.
- Everything else is kept while you have an account.
- Anonymous usage statistics are kept for one year. Because they are not linked to your account, deleting your account does not find them; deleting the app deletes the identifier they carry.
- When you delete your account, we delete it straight away: your profile, messages, clips and postcards (sent and received), friends, Seeds, items and notification address. For any Seed pack you bought we keep only Apple's transaction number, no longer linked to you, so the same purchase can never be claimed twice. Reports you made are deleted too. A report someone else made about you is kept for up to one year so we can act on repeat abuse, then deleted.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: in the app, My Parrot → Settings → Delete my account. It cannot be undone. If you no longer have the app, see how to delete your account.
- Get a copy of your data: My Parrot → Settings → Download my data.
- Block anyone from a chat, and unblock them in Settings.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you have rights to access, correct, delete and port your data, and to complain to a regulator. Write to us to use any of them.
Children
Pass the Parrot is for people aged 13 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you think a child under 13 is using it, tell us and we will delete the account.
Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections. Voice clips live at long random addresses that only the two people in a chat learn. Photos and videos additionally require a signed-in participant; a blocked participant cannot open them.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes we will update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app if the change matters. Questions: Hello@LarkEnterprisesLLC.com.
